About the book

Bill Edgar's story reads as a virtual history of golf in Victoria from his first competitive year in 1926 until the late 1950s. In that period of time he was part of and witnessed many memorable events. He played alongside names that are now immortalised in Australian Golf - Ivo Whitton, Jim Ferrier, Mick Ryan, Harry Wiliams, Joe Kirkwood, Doug Bachli, to name just a few. There have been few, if any, golfers in Australia who have been more highly regarded as sportsmen and none in amateur golf have put as much back into the game in their post competitive years. Peter Thomson in his foreword describes Edgar's swing as 'the very essence of simplicy' and his action 'the smoothest rhythm of all'. It was this swing which enabled Edgar to achieve his incredible record of consistency and helped him maintain a handicap of scratch or better for 39 years - furthermore, he remained on a single figure handicap for 62 consecutive years. At a time when Bobby Jones was the undisputed top golfer in the world, the Melbourne Press gave Edgar the ultimate accolade of calling him 'Australia's Bobby Jones'. If anyone can be called a Legend in Amateur Golf in Australia then it must certainly be Bill Edgar.
